Tips on how to get my ex boyfriend back?

okay so i broke up with my boyfriend because i thought i liked someone else. But it turned out to be that i dont like this new guy an di really really really really miss my ex. He says he still loves me, and he knows that i want him back..but he wont take me back. Any tips?
He said that it was a waste of time to try and get him back right now because its too soon for him. Should i wait and try later?
